Best Time to Visit Gangotri Temple
● Summer (May to June):
During summer season, Gangotri Yatra is most comfortable. The paths are open and the weather remains pleasant. Devotees can travel easily and enjoy darshan while viewing the beautiful mountains and river. This time is considered most suitable for visiting.
● Winter (November to April):
In winter, it is extremely cold here with heavy snowfall. The doors of the Gangotri temple remain closed. Pilgrims cannot visit at this time. For darshan and worship, devotees see Gangotri Mata's idol in the temple situated at Murari village.
● Monsoon (July to August):
In monsoon, Gangotri area faces intense rainfall. The tracks become unsafe and slippery, with chances of landslides. Journey is avoided in this period, as most devotees decide to undertake the yatra after the rainy season ends.
How to Reach Gangotri Dham
There are many ways to reach here – air, rail and road. There are also walking or trekking routes to Gangotri.
By Air:
In Dehradun, Jolly Grant Airport serves as the nearest airbase for reaching Gangotri Dham. The distance from Dehradun Airport to Gangotri is about 250 km. From the airport, you can reach Rishikesh or Haridwar by taxi or bus. Air travel is the fastest way to save time, but later you will have to travel by road.
By Train:
It is very easy to reach Haridwar from Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur and Varanasi. Closest railhead to Gangotri Dham is Haridwar, and from this point, the journey can be covered via bus, cab, or private transport. Devotees traveling by train can reach Haridwar comfortably.
By Road:
The easiest and most common route to Gangotri Dham is through the road. Bus service is available from Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun to Gangotri. Gangotri can also be easily reached by private vehicle. The route is hilly and winding, so one should travel carefully. While traveling by road, you can enjoy the peaks, small lakes, greenery and snow-capped peaks.
By trek:
A unique experience of reaching Gangotri Dham is by walking route. From Jankichatti or Sonprayag, some devotees reach Gangotri Dham on foot or by mule or palanquin. There is a trek of about 13 kilometers from Jankichatti to Gangotri Dham. The route is hilly and winding, but full of natural beauty.
