Kedarnath Dham
Kedarnath Dham is an ancient and sacred temple of Lord Shiva situated among the high ranges of the Himalayas in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is famous for its elegance and faith. Kedarnath Temple History

According to stories, after the fight of Mahabharata, the Pandavas went to Lord Shiva to remove their sins. But Lord Shiva, angry with them, left Kailash and came to the Kedar area to hide. The Pandavas kept following him. Then Lord Shiva showed himself as a bull. At the same time, the upper part of Lord Shiva came out as a Jyotirlinga in Kedarnath. Since then, this place is counted as one of the main Dhams of Lord Shiva.
According to historians, Kedarnath temple was built in the 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. He came here and did hard worship and repaired the templeIt is said that Shankaracharya also attained Samadhi here. The architecture of the temple is made of huge lumps of stones, which have been joined without any mortar or cement. Every year, due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather, Kedarnath temple closes in winter. According to tradition, the gate of the temple is closed on the occasion of Bhaiya Dooj (two days after Diwali). In the year 2026, the possible closure date of Kedarnath temple is considered to be 3 November.According to some sources, this date can also be around 16 November 2026.
Usually all the temples of Char Dham Yatra are closed from the last week of October to the first week of November. The date of closing of the doors of Kedarnath Dham is decided every year on the basis of Panchang and religious traditions and its final decision is announced by the priests of Omkareshwar temple located in Ukhimath.
After the closure of the temple, the Panchmukhi Doli of Lord Shiva is brought from Kedarnath to Ukhimath and worship is done there in winter. For centuries, this tradition has been continuing.
Therefore, travelers are advised to plan the 2026 yatra in October or early November at the latest. The official announcement will be made in 2026 as per Panchangam and religious rituals.

How to Reach Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath Temple is in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district and it is counted among the four major pilgrimage places of Hinduism. To reach here, one can travel by road, rail, or air routes.
By Air:
The nearest airport is Joshimath/Gauchar and Devasthan. Since Kedarnath has no airport, one can reach the major destinations of the Garhwal region via taxi or bus from Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (about 221 km). From the airport, a bus/taxi can be taken to Gauchar or Sinoli via Garhwal routes via Rudraprayag.
By Rail:
The nearest railway station to Kedarnath is Rohtak or Haridwar. Regular buses and taxis are available from Haridwar railway station. From Haridwar, Rudraprayag and Gauchar can be reached by bus or taxi.
By Road:
It is also possible to reach Kedarnath by road. One can travel by vehicle from Rudraprayag to Gauchar. Only walking or horse/pony service is available from Gauchar to Shri Kedarnath. The walking route is about 16-18 km long and takes about 6-8 hours to travel. The route offers panoramic views of the hill scenery and Gangotri river.

From Gauchar to the main temple, a clear path is made for devotees Apart from this, helicopter service is also available, which makes the journey easier and less time consuming.

Nearest Railway Station to Kedarnath Temple
The nearest railway station to reach Kedarnath Dham is Rishikesh Railway Station.
This station is situated around 216 km away from Kedarnath. From here, devotees can reach Gaurikund by road, which is the last motorable place of Kedarnath Yatra. The temple is reached by climbing about 16-18 km on foot from Gaurikund.
Rishikesh Railway Station is the main station connecting the major religious places of Uttarakhand. Buses, taxis and shared vehicles are easily available from here. Apart from this, Haridwar Railway Station is also a big option, which is about 241 km from Kedarnath and can also be traveled by road from here.
To make the journey easier, most of the devotees reach Rishikesh or Haridwar by train and complete the further journey by road and then by foot.
